Lawn Aeration & Overseeding in Dayton, Ohio

If your lawn looks thin, patchy, or worn out, aeration and overseeding is one of the most effective ways to restore its health and thickness. This combination improves soil structure, encourages deeper root growth, and fills in bare spots for a greener, more resilient lawn.

What Is Lawn Aeration?

Core aeration uses a specialized machine to remove small plugs of soil and turf from your lawn. These holes allow oxygen, water, and nutrients to reach the root zone—especially important in Ohio’s dense, compacted clay soils. Aerated lawns respond better to watering, fertilizing, and are more resistant to drought and disease.

What Is Overseeding?

After aerating, we apply high-quality grass seed to help fill in bare areas and thicken your turf. Overseeding works best when paired with aeration, since the holes provide ideal seed-to-soil contact for germination. It’s perfect for repairing:

    • Bald patches or thinning grass
    • Areas scalped by mowing
    • Foot traffic zones (kids, pets)
    • Lawns that dry out too quickly in summer
    • Newly installed lawns that need better density

Benefits of Aeration & Overseeding

    • Improves root development and nutrient uptake
    • Enhances drought tolerance
    • Reduces thatch and compaction
    • Fills in bare spots and thickens your lawn
    • Helps prevent weed growth by crowding out invaders

When Should You Aerate Your Lawn in Ohio?

We recommend aerating and overseeding in the fall, when cooler temperatures and consistent moisture support root growth. Fall also allows your lawn time to recover before winter and come back stronger in spring.

Does My Lawn Need Aeration?

If you notice compact soil, excessive thatch, water pooling, or slow grass growth, your lawn likely needs aeration. It’s especially important if:

    • You’ve never had it done before
    • Your lawn sees regular use from kids or pets
    • You leave grass clippings on the lawn
    • Your lawn is newly installed or still struggling to establish

How Lawn Aeration Works

Healthier Roots

The aeration process loosens the soil and promotes healthy root growth by encouraging the roots to grow deeper.  The result is healthier, stronger grass.

Nutrient Uptake

With a healthier root system your grass is able to uptake the nutrients in the soil much more readily.  This encourages the lush, green, growth you're after.

Loosens Compacted Soil

The aeration process improves drainage and helps prevent the soil from becoming compacted and developing into a "hardpan" situation with pooling water.

Salvador and Arenas Landscaping did a fantastic job for us! I was in the process of moving into my new home and noticed the work they were doing on my neighbor's yard. I asked if they could perform some magic on my yard as soon as they had availability, because my yard was neglected for some time by the previous owners. The very next morning Salvador and his crew were at my property trimming, edging, removing trees and laying down a good 6 yards of beautiful black mulch. I was amazed with the transformation in such a short time. All of the clipping and waste was cleaned up all in the sweltering heat. I can't recommend Arenas Landscaping enough! They aren't cheap, but fair for the work they do.
