What to Consider When Planning a Firepit

Installing a firepit involves more than just picking a spot. At Arenas Landscaping & Construction, we help Dayton-area homeowners make smart, safe choices for long-lasting enjoyment:

Placement – We choose level, open areas with safe distances from structures, trees, and flammable materials—plus plenty of room for seating.

Local Codes – We handle permitting and follow all local fire feature regulations, including setbacks, approved materials, and fuel safety.

Fuel Type – Choose from wood-burning for that classic campfire feel, or gas/propane for clean-burning convenience.

Materials – We use only durable, fire-rated materials like natural stone, block, or brick that match your landscape and stand up to heat.

Style – From in-ground firepits to raised gas fire tables, we’ll design a look that fits your space and complements your home.

Size & Layout – We design your firepit to fit your space, seating needs, and desired fire size—ensuring it’s both functional and comfortable.

Safety Features – We include important safety elements like spark screens, gas shut-offs, ventilation, and nearby water access for peace of mind.

Seating & Landscaping – We can add built-in seat walls, freestanding chairs, and custom landscaping with plants, lighting, and pathways to create a cozy, inviting space.

Budget – Most firepit projects range from $2,500 to $10,000+, depending on materials, fuel type, and added features. We work with your budget to offer the best design options without surprises.

Maintenance – We’ll advise you on caring for your firepit—whether it’s clearing ash, checking gas lines, or protecting your investment with a cover.

By carefully considering these factors, you can create a safe, functional, and aesthetically pleasing outdoor firepit that enhances your backyard and provides a welcoming space for gathering and relaxation.

What Does It Cost To Build An Outdoor Firepit?

Simple Firepit Area

Simple Firepits

$3000 - $10,000

This would be for a smaller firepit in your backyard along with a surrounding gravel base for a seating area.

Mid-Range Firepit on a backyard paver patio with surrounding seat wall.

Medium Firepits

$10,000 - $20,000

This would be for a medium sized firepit with more elaborate landscaping surrounding it.  This could include a small paver patio and a pathway.

Luxury outdoor gas fire feature on a beautiful backyard patio.

Luxury Firepits

$20,000 - $60,000+

This would be for much more than a simple firepit.  This price range could include a patio surrounding the firepit, landscape beds around the area, lighting, and more.

These prices are only ball park figures to give you a rough idea as to what you should expect for the cost of a firepit to be constructed in your yard.  Your particular firepit project may vary depending on the site, the specific materials chosen, and the overall scope of work.

FAQ's About Firepit Construction

Firepit designs can range from very simple designs to more elaborate, custom-built structures.  We work with local suppliers that also offer pre-designed firepits that come in a kit form for a professional to install.

The most common and popular design options include in-ground firepits, above-ground firepits, fire tables, and fire rocks. We can help you choose a firepit design that best suits your backyard space, aesthetic preferences, and your budget.

Yes, we can certainly design and install gas or propane firepits in addition to traditional wood-burning firepits. Typically we'll subcontract with a qualified plumber to install any required gas lines or connections.  Gas and propane firepits offer benefits such as ease of use, cleaner burning, and fewer restrictions in some areas.  If you would like to discuss gas or propane options for your firepit we'd be happy to provide you with those options.

The construction time for a backyard firepit depends on factors like the size, design complexity, and the materials used. On average, we can complete a firepit project within a few days to a week.  We do however book up quickly for these types of projects so it's a good idea to contact us several weeks if not months ahead of time if this is a project you plan on doing.  We generally cannot accommodate requests to build a firepit on short notice.

Permit requirements for firepit construction vary depending on your local municipal regulations. Some areas may require a permit, while others do not.  Generally a permit is not required for a wood burning fire-pit but for gas or propane firepits a permit is often required and can be handled by the plumber who is hired to install the gas piping.

Common materials used for firepit construction include natural stone, landscape blocks, bricks, and metal inserts. Each material offers different aesthetics, durability, and cost. We can help you choose the most suitable material for your specific needs and design preferences.

When choosing seating options for your backyard firepit, consider factors such as comfort, durability, maintenance, and style.  You'll also want to consider how many people do you expect to enjoy your firepit?  You'll want enough seating for your family and possibly some overflow if you have guests or host an outdoor gathering. Seating options range from built-in benches to seat walls to freestanding chairs or even outdoor furniture. We can discuss seating options with you during our on-site consultation.
